Very warm welcome in a quiet Georgian neighbourhood . The Thistle offers all you need and the city centre is within walking distance.

Just returned from a two night break in Edinburgh, beautiful city. I could not recommend this hotel enough, fantastic location and excellent staff. Special thanks to Andrew & Sam for all their help. I would have no problem in recommending this hotel to anyone and I would definitely return.

The hotel was nice. Very friendly staff who were very helpful with weather reports, food recommendations and helping with bags. The only problem was the mattresses had seen better days and I found myself sliding down as the mattress sunk. The rest was as expected for the price.

Brutally honest review about the hotel - and, apparently some previous guests

I took my 8 year old daughter here for a long weekend. I'm not going to lie, the hotel is a bit on the shabby side, but unless you're taking part in four in the bed and going to pick at every little crack in a 19th Century Town House it's more than sufficient for a three night stay. If you want the Ritz, pay for the Ritz, don't pay for a room in an old house then complain that you're not staying at the Ritz. Let's do the bad stuff first. It's a bit shabby, there was a (very) small water stain on our ceiling, no lock on the bathroom door, the furniture was creaking and insecure and the window stays was a bit damaged and a bit of the skirting board was falling off. The water stain didn't bother us at all, the bathroom door shut despite not locking, and we know as a family not to open the bathroom door when someone else is in the shower or excavating their bowls so the lack of a lock made no difference. I had no intention of practicing suplexes on my daughter into the furniture so it's stability wasn't an issue, it held a cup of tea so it was adequate and as long as the skirting board wasn't holding back an interstellar invasion force I could cope with it being loose. The biggest letdown was going back to the bar with our local friends one evening and there being no one around to serve us for at least half an hour. I rang the bell and phoned the hotel and there was no response whatsoever. I could of course have complaints and griped about this, marking down the hotel and showed my best disgruntled face but as I was blessed with a sense of humour we had a good laugh about it and went to the off licence instead. That was the hotel's loss, not mine, I still got my whiskey so I was a happy little camper. The positives for me outweighed the minor inconvenience of the negatives. Before our stay I asked for an extra bed for my daughter and they said no problem, it was out and made on our arrival. A few days before we travelled our train was cancelled and the hotel sorted a parking space so I could drive within an hour of my asking. The staff were all tremendously helpful and friendly. They were youngsters which might put some people off but as I a) was once young myself and b) don't judge people on their age but rather their behaviour this wasn't a problem at all. I also want to address some of the other reviews I read before booking to set people's minds at ease. Some reviews complained about a lift. Yes there are a lot of stairs if you're on an upper floor as we were. You are however visiting Edinburgh. If you've never been it's essentially a massive hill with an extra bit of extra big hill at the bottom of the Royal Mile. If you can't cope with a couple of stairs go to the Netherlands or somewhere else flat. If stairs are a problem then the City of Edinburgh is going to be a problem. Some reviews complained about the distance from the City centre. Edinburgh has these things called traffic lights. They're everywhere. You aren't driving into the city faster than you're walking from anywhere within the distance of this hotel. My daughter is 8, and like most typical youth of today prefers playing on electric devices rather than exercise. She HATES walking. She was fine with the distance from the hotel to the city centre. To complain about the distance from the hotel to - let's say Arthur's Seat - which is realistically the furthest you're going to be walking to any attraction (there's the Yacht in Leith but you'd be better getting a bus there anyway) is bizarre. I'll say it outright, you'd have to be immensely lazy or severely unhealthy for that to be a problem - on either counts Edinburgh is a massive hill, go and take a holiday somewhere else - this place isn't for you. If you're not a miserable so and so who thinks walking from your sofa to the fridge is a marathon you'll probably enjoy the walk. It's short and there's a lot to see in that distance that you might otherwise miss. Finally reviews about the facilities. It's unkempt but not untidy or unclean. There's a safe in your room, a working shower, sink and toilet and tea making facilities. I ran out of milk and the young man on reception replenished my supply straight away. There's a bar (so I hear) and the staff are very helpful if you want local information. I gave this hotel five stars because for the price they deserve it, it's not the Hilton it's a character filled old house but they don't charge like the Hilton, they charge for a character filled old house. If you're not capable of climbing the stairs or walking to the city centre don't come here - or Edinburgh - it's not for you even if you don't get to buy an 'I love Scotland' keyring and say you've visited the home of your Irish ancestors. If you frown at young people or don't have a sense of humour don't come here, you'll probably be looking for something to complain about to fulfill your lack of a life anyway. If, however you have working legs (or have a friend willing to carry your wheelchair and yourself up the stairs) are possessed of a sense of humour and want a real experience of Edinburgh at an excellent price I would say absolutely stay here. I have been to Edinburgh many, many times. I have friends here. It's my daughter's first visit and she already wants to come back (we got home and hour ago). This hotel is what you make of it - and that will be an extension of yourself. If you're miserable in life and complain about it being wet in Scotland you'll probably hate it, but I will stress for everyone - that's an extension of you, not a reflection on the hotel.

The stay was really good and the bed was good compared to other hotels, but the room was a little bit dirty and furniture falling apart, the internet says high speed but it was so slow and we didn’t get any internet at all, the room was really cold and the heater oven in the room didn’t work at all, it was really hard to flush the toilet because it was broken, also the dust and mole in the room was not great at all
